The
negative impact on the biosphere as a result of increasing population and
consumption is becoming more apparent each year. During the past years, many
have tried to raise the awareness level and understanding of citizens of the
world to the seriousness of global environmental problems. One should consider
current concerns about human activity leading to pollution and the effects on
the climate, including .... the disposal of waste products (solid/liquid/air)
on the earth. In spite of increased media attention on environmental issues
such as global warming, water pollution and health and disease, there is little
evidence that post secondary schools in Singapore are teaching more classes in
ecology and environmental science or infusing more science based environmental
issues into traditional courses in earth science, biology, chemistry and
physics. It is evident that they do emphasize the need for students to become
more scientifically literate with the ability to "identify scientific
issues underlying national and local decisions and express positions that are
scientifically and technically informed". Nevertheless, environmental
hygiene awareness is to be recognized and appreciated before further
enhancement could be implemented.
